Lifestyle

Advertising and lifestyle photography are about people!

Behind every business are people. Period. Custom home builders do not just build a structure out of brick and mortar. They construct a haven, a place of comfort and pride for homeowners. Interior designers do not select reams of fabric and fiddle through a stack of color swatches at random. Interior designers transform wishes and dreams into fantastic spaces of excitement or calm.

Your local internet provider does not (or at least they should not) run an ad online with image after image of cables, routers, and computers. But that’s what the internet is, isn’t it? No. The most successful photos of businesses show the skilled technicians that keep your internet connected 24-7, the kids watching Tik-Tok videos while you download a huge file from work. It’s about the people. This is lifestyle photography.

One of my favorite yet challenging parts of my job is lifestyle photography. A bathtub will be very patient while you adjust the towel for the 15th time. A house will sit and wait for hours for the right lighting. Photographing people? Not a chance. Try to meet a stranger, build rapport in 5 seconds or less, ask them to repeat an action, and be themselves. It’s not easy.

But when it all comes together and nails it, there is no better feeling!

Yes, you need a photo of the exterior of your retail location. Yes, you need a fantastic photo of that kitchen and bathroom. But, don’t forget the people behind the product and the people you are seeking to buy your product. They are your winning subjects!
