Bridge Photography & Video

The Riverwalk segment of the Hickory Trail showcases one of Hickory’s most beautiful, natural assets — the Catawba River. The Riverwalk runs approximately 2.3 miles through Geitner Park along the river and is a nice little trek. There is not much parking so be ready for a good walk.

The elevated walkway is integrated into the adjacent landscape and provides visitors with a spectacular view of the river and nearby mountains. The Riverwalk's overwater bridge was designed by renowned architect Miguel Rosales and is the longest inverted Fink truss bridge in North America. Mr. Rosales contacted me from his Boston studio so I headed out to Hickory for photos and video of the bridge. It was my first bridge!

The contrast between the solid structure and the fluid water beneath, the perspective lines that lead the eye into the distance—all contribute to the visual drama that makes this bridge such a compelling subject. As it was very early fall, and the reflections on the leaves framed it well.

The symmetry and geometry of a well-designed bridge can be as captivating as a piece of sculpture, inviting viewers to admire its form from every angle. The Riverwalk Bridge hit all the marks.
