Manufacturing Clean Rooms
Photographing in a clean room environment requires a meticulous approach, as capturing compelling images must be balanced with strict adherence to cleanliness and safety protocols. During a recent shoot at one of Celgard’s manufacturing facilities, our team experienced this firsthand. Celgard, a global leader in producing high-performance membrane separators for cell phones and electric car batteries, maintains rigorous standards to ensure the purity and quality of its products.
Before entering the clean room, our team donned full-body clean garments, complete with hair nets (always a fun addition) and shoe booties. These precautions are critical in preventing any contaminants from entering the controlled environment. The process started with stepping on a sticky mat designed to remove any debris from our footwear. Next, we passed through a small, closet-like space equipped to remove surface contaminants from our clothing and equipment.
Celgard's product, a high-performance membrane separator that resembles white Saran wrap, is produced in massive rolls. The challenge of photographing in such a setting lies in capturing the scale and detail of the manufacturing process while ensuring that nothing compromises the clean room's integrity.
The crisp, white rolls of membrane, meticulously produced and handled, were a stark contrast against the sterile backdrop. Our approach focused on highlighting the precision and care that Celgard’s team invests in every step of the production process. The images needed to reflect the advanced technology and expertise behind the product and the cleanliness and orderliness critical to its success.
In the end, photographing in Celgard’s clean room was an exercise in precision—much like the manufacturing process itself. It required careful planning, a thorough understanding of the environment, and a commitment to maintaining the highest cleanliness and safety standards.
